Handmade ceramics for everyday use.

Practical Pieces is a Boorloo (Perth) based ceramic studio run by Rachel. Her ceramics have an emphasis on form and function, while being minimal, stylish and always practical. Her pieces look equally as great in the home, as they do with a picnic in the park on a nice sunny day.

Rachel’s ceramics are all using hand-building techniques meaning that there’s no wheel involved. This gives each piece their own individuality with no pair the same.

Practical Pieces uses sustainable processes from start to finish and follows the ‘reduce, reuse, recycle’ principle:

Reduce

  • Reduce the amount of clay waste by properly planning and designing new pieces.

  • Having regular seconds and sample sales so that pieces with small faults can go to good homes and be loved.

  • Reduce packaging waste on orders by using recyclable or biodegradable materials.

Reuse

  • Reuse old newspapers, boxes and other bits of packaging for deliveries.

  • Re-use any dried up clay or greenware pieces that aren’t up to scratch (more deets in the next bit!).

Recycle

  • Lot’s of clay can easily get scrapped while making and tidying up pieces. Practical Pieces has a clay recycling process where any unused clay gets sun-dried, soaked in water and then turned back into ready-to-use clay for new objects.

About Rachel

Hi, I’m Rachel :-) I started creating Practical Pieces in April 2020 after wanting something to do away from my day job on the laptop as a graphic designer and also have some of my own creative freedom.

I’m a bit of an all-round-creative who enjoys painting, doodling and most of all, the slow process of making with clay (a lot of things away from my laptop!).

Follow Practical Pieces on Instagram to learn a little bit more about me and all things behind-the-scenes :-)
